Some may remember times when the Delta Queen would float gracefully past Newburgh, and play her spectacular musical pipes as she passed through the Newburgh Locks. Sometimes you could hear her song from homes in the hills beyond the Newburgh waterfront, drawing fans and surprised visitors. If the Delta Queen was being floated up in the locks, she would play a song with ascending notes, and when being lowered through the locks going the opposite direction on her way back, the calliope would play descending notes. It was delightful for everyone, and I miss this tradition, as the Delta Queen is no longer allowed to carry passengers. This photo was taken on a very rare day when the Delta Queen stopped at the bottom of the stairway near the Edgewater Grille. The Town of Newburgh was there to greet her, and invited her passengers to shop in Historic Newburgh for a few hours. Such a wonderful memory! If you want to see this beautiful steamboat in person, you’ll need to go to Chattanooga, Tennessee.
