Newburgh Farmer’s Market Chef and Vendors

It’s mid-September and the Farmer’s Market season is coming to a close.  Apples, pumpkins and caramel are popular right now, and Chef Adam prepared a creative dish for us today.  The following video features several market vendors and a cooking demonstration.

What a view!

Summer Saturdays in Newburgh are a real treat.  The Newburgh Farmers Market is open from 8 am to noon every Saturday, May through September.  Located at the corner of State Street and Water Street, across from the Edgewater Grille, the parking lot transforms to a venue that offers gentle breezes and gorgeous views of the Ohio River.

The Newburgh Rivertown Trail extends along the Ohio River east towards the Newburgh Locks and Dam, and west towards Evansville.  Today we took a short walk heading west, and dreamed of living in one of the charming homes that enjoy this picturesque view of the river and Kentucky.  What caught my eye today were all the peaceful and relaxing ways Newburghians have created to take in the views.

So while we are waiting for the right time to buy one of these beauties for ourselves, these are lovely places for us to enjoy for free!

And when you get a bit hungry, there are some nice restaurants to enjoy, with amazing views too! Edgewater Grille, Cafe Arazu, Cleo’s, Ben and Penny’s and others!

Tucker Hospitality at United Leasing Championship

A world class event is happening in Newburgh this weekend, the United Leasing Championship at Victoria National Golf Club.  I have a personal experience with this gorgeous property.  When the idea of a golf course and community was being formed, I had the privilege of touring the property before it was developed with the owner/developer.  We rode in a four wheel drive truck over very rough terrain touring the land and listening to his ideas.  He had a vision, and made it a spectacular reality!  You don’t meet people like that every day.  As an agent at FC Tucker Emge Realtors, I was involved early on in the marketing of beautiful homes at Victoria Manor.  Today I spent a spectacular day at the Tucker Hospitality tent watching the players and spending time with friends.  We will have this hospitality tent again next year, so let me know if you’re a golf fan.  I’d love to invite you to join us next year.  If you are curious about homes in this neighborhood, Talk to Geri Terry.

Cleo’s Bakery and Brown Bag Lunches

Screened deck at Cleo's Cleo's front view Bakery items Vintage posters Cleo's

On my way between appointments today, I stopped by Cleo’s for a quick bite.  This is one of my favorite places because of the cheerful atmosphere and delicious food.  I chose the quiche which was light, fluffy and perfectly seasoned with fruit salad for my side, and it was very fresh and cold. I love it that Cleo’s has plenty of vegetarian choices for me!  You can build your own sandwich or order hot sandwiches like BLT, El Cubano and Hot Reuben.  Other items available include salads, homemade soup, coffee and juices.  The desserts are so tempting too!  You can stop by for a breakfast sandwich, and grab a brown bag lunch for later.  If you’re in the mood for a walk and a picnic, it’s the ideal place to carry out a brown bag lunch and enjoy the river views from the picnic tables at the Old Lock and Dam.  There is intimate seating at the front window, back room and the outdoor screened porch with a fabulous view of the riverfront walkway.  I can’t wait to split a PB&J on brioche with my granddaughter the next time she’s in town!  Cleo’s is named after the owner’s beautiful mother, whose photo you will see at the counter.  Don’t miss this experience when you’re in Downtown Newburgh.

Little Thunder Regatta  June 22 and 23, 8 am to 5 pm

Ladies and Gentlemen, START YOUR ENGINES!  If you love hydroplane racing, check out the Little Thunder Regatta this Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23, 2013.  Race site is Eagle Crest Lake at I-164 and the Lloyd Expressway, behind the Cracker Barrel in Evansville, Indiana.  The action starts at 8 in the morning.  Practice time will be Friday June 21.  River City Racing Club is hosting the event, and you can check them out on Facebook.  Bring your sunscreen, binoculars, chairs and hats!  Kids and kids at heart will love the rooster tails on these remote control race boats.

Many of us fondly remember Thunder on the Ohio at the Evansville Riverfront from years gone by.  If you want to see the big boats while they are in this part of the world, you can catch the Madison Regatta on July 5 – 7  in Madison, Indiana.  The H1 Unlimited series started in Doha, Qatar in February and will finish in San Diego, California in September.

Vecchio’s Italian Market and Delicatessen

I have been enchanted with this shop since the day I saw the sign going up; the anticipation of such a cool place opening up in Downtown Newburgh was exciting. The smell of the bread and rich flavors when you walk in the door is mouthwatering, and the eclectic assortment of ingredients and menu items keep me coming back for more. Even when I’m busy running errands, it’s the most comfortable place to stop in and have a bite to eat by myself. Vecchio’s has a cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and lots of interesting items to shop while they make the order. There is also an adjacent wine and beer room displaying exotic and popular drinks. A vegetarian can find wonderful choices here, with spinach quiche among my favorites. On this day, it was a simply delicious grilled cheese with an orange soda (and some German mustard to go). On another occasion, I sipped a black cherry soda while enjoying the view of the Ohio River and chatting with my daughter-in-law. Be sure to sign up for the e-mail newsletter and take advantage of the $45 Friday dinner for two specials, complete with a bottle of wine. You’ll love this place too! www.VecchiosItalianMarket.com

Delta Queen Memories

Some may remember times when the Delta Queen would float gracefully past Newburgh, and play her spectacular musical pipes as she passed through the Newburgh Locks.  Sometimes you could hear her song from homes in the hills beyond the Newburgh waterfront, drawing fans and surprised visitors.  If the Delta Queen was being floated up in the locks, she would play a song with ascending notes, and when being lowered through the locks going the opposite direction on her way back, the calliope would play descending notes.  It was delightful for everyone, and I miss this tradition, as the Delta Queen is no longer allowed to carry passengers.  This photo was taken on a very rare day when the Delta Queen stopped at the bottom of the stairway near the Edgewater Grille.  The Town of Newburgh was there to greet her, and invited her passengers to shop in Historic Newburgh for a few hours.  Such a wonderful memory!  If you want to see this beautiful steamboat in person, you’ll need to go to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Holiday World ‘Staycation’

Just 45 minutes from Newburgh, Holiday World is a world-class theme park in our back yard.  The terrifying climb of the 70 mph roller coaster (The Voyage, voted #1 in the world) is too much for me, but I can handle the milder rides (Hollow Swings), and there’s definitely something for everyone.  There are excellent live shows featuring singing and dancing talent from all over America, as well as a fabulous high dive show.  It’s just been voted the best water park in the world, with the longest water ride (The Mammoth), and if you want to ride another one like it, you’ll have to wait until December and go halfway around the world, when Abu Dhabi’s is built.  It has also consistently been voted the cleanest park in the world, and it’s true!  Splashin’ Safari has new private poolside cabanas available for lease, with wi-fi and refrigerators.  How lucky can we be to have such a great ‘staycation’ venue?  Admission to the park includes free unlimited drinks and sunscreen.  The season pass is a steal if you can go at least three times this summer, and you get 10% on every purchase in the park, including the chocolate walnut fudge for the ride home.  Yippee!!!  www.HolidayWorld.com

Cafe Arazu

Hungry for some real food, a fabulous view and charming atmosphere, Café Arazu satisfies all of the above.  My choice was Shepherd Salad Appetizer and Apple-Spearmint tea, which I enjoyed under the umbrella on the deck while watching jet skis buzzing up and down the river.  Originally an ice house, this quaint restaurant affords a view of the Ohio River from inside or outside on the semi-shaded deck.  Check out their menu, and plan to spend a relaxing evening under a string of lights, listening to live music on Thursdays.  www.Cafe-Arazu.com

Newburgh Captured!

Image

Siege by Confederacy remembered 150 years later. July 18, 1862, the sleepy town of Newburgh Indiana was overtaken by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Today, residents gathered under the shade of our community Sycamore tree on the river bank and heard a proclamation commemorating the sesquicentennial anniversary of the siege. A civil war re-enactor portrayed General Johnson as he recollected details of our most infamous day. Learn more about this historic event by reading “Thunder from a Clear Sky”, or check out the list of upcoming events at www.HistoricNewburgh.org Meet at the Edgewater Grille at 6:00 pm Thursday July 19th for a historic walk describing the events, or come to a spaghetti dinner at Preservation Hall at 6:00 on Friday July 20th for a preview of the Newburgh Museum. Enjoy a lecture from the author of “Thunder from a Clear Sky” at 11:00 am at Preservation Hall on Saturday July 21st, as he details the events following the most exciting day in Newburgh’s history.
